Spot on Jonathan. The howls of outrage from the punditry and media have been nothing short of pathetic. You’re also quite right about the perception of Arsenal and our fans. I’ve been trying to work out when the worm turned. Remember the season of Jesus when we were every neutrals pick to win it? How times change. I asked a friend why he’s so invested in us losing. His reply: I hate Arteta….hmmmm. Ok.
That's the thing Ben, the way the media destroys Arteta is criminal. As Arsenal fans we listen to him, see who he really is, consume various fan media, but the average fan has an image constructed by media outlets that's relentless in its negative narrative. I watched the Newcastle game a while back with a Newcastle fan pal of mine and the absolute bollocks he was coming out with about Arteta was just weird, until you realise his opinion was constructed for him by the shallow talking points churned out by the media.
The quality of general football punditry and coverage is just terrible and the manufacturing of opinion goes on across the board. As strange as it might sound I think a kind of poetic analysis is that in our digital age we're guided even further toward black and white positions, right or wrong, ones or zeros, and that nuance and compromise is being killed off. This is just annoying in football but literally life threatening in wider society.
Anyway, IF we manage to win the League it'll be interesting to see how Arteta and Arsenal are treated. Tee media is prone to doffing its hat at winners so maybe things will calm down a little.
The same pundits who cry ‘foul’ (pardon the pun) because Arsenal got the (correct) decision in their favour would be completely silent if the decision had gone West Ham’s way. The reason? They don’t like Arsenal. I would have more respect for them if they come out and said that.
‘It’s fine that people hate us, it’s part of our history..’
